The 1st of October, 2012 marks the United Nation’s International Day of Older Persons. Since the 1950’s, “life expectancy worldwide rose from 46 to 68 years” (United Nations, 2012, para.1) and is expected to continue to rise. The numbers of elderly women outnumber the number of men and this trend is expected to continue. One of the purposes of the International Day of Older Persons is to highlight the need for “social protection, long-term care and access to public health for the elderly” as well as providing “more opportunities” (Ki-moon, 2012, para.4).
The United Nation’s International Day of Older Persons also aims to highlight “the particular needs and challenges faced by many older people” and the “essential contribution the majority of older men and women can continue to make to the functioning of society” (United Nations, 2012, para.2). It encourages governments to examine their current policies and support for aged-care and to implement any changes required to ensure the health, well-being and continued influence of the elderly continues at a level that goes beyond basic human rights.
